What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a gentle form of body work in which the practitioner applies subtle, rolling hand movements to the client’s muscles and connective tissues. These actions prompt the body’s natural healing process without painful manipulation. Developed in Australia in the 1950s to 1980s, there are now thousands of Bowen practitioners worldwide.

What is Bowen Therapy used for?

Bowen can be used in the treatment of a wide range of health problems, including:

  • Back pain and sciatica, postural problems, neck and shoulder pain, jaw pain (TMD)
  • RSI (Repetitive strain injury), carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist, “tennis” elbow, stiff or “frozen” shoulder and other overuse injures.
  • Sporting injuries, such as strains and sprains, or muscle soreness.
  • Arthritic pain and post-surgical pain
  • Digestive and bowel problems
  • Earache, tinnitus
  • Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, headaches, migraines and stress
  • Menstrual and hormonal problems including PMS and infertility
  • Respiratory problems including asthma, bronchitis, hay fever and sinusitis.
  • Colic, feeding difficulties and general restlessness in babies; and so on.

Who Can Have It?

Bowen Therapy is non-invasive and gentle, so just about anyone can be treated, even those experiencing intense pain. Age doesn’t matter either – newborns to seniors, any body can benefit from Bowen Therapy.

What Happens?

The client usually lies on a massage table as the practitioner carries out a series of pre-determined moves over specific parts of their body. You don’t have to undress and, if you are unable to lie on the massage table, Bowen can be given while seated. Between each series of moves, the practitioner may leave the room for a short period of time. These breaks are important to give the body a chance to respond to the therapy. Bowen is also a quiet treatment so, while soft music may be playing, there isn’t a lot of talking during a session. This is a time for your mind to relax and enjoy a gentle healing experience.

How Long Does it Take?

Sessions usally last around an hour. Three initial treatments about a week apart are recommended and regular ” maintenance” sessions are also helpful, particularly for chronic conditions.

Where Can I Get It?

Bowen Therapy is available by appointment only at:

  • The River House, 193 Brisbane Terrace, Goodna
